6 Ways to Encourage Lazy Dogs to Exercise

  1. Daily Walks – Walking your dog every day will help their endurance. Start off with a short walk at a slow speed. Each day increase the length and speed of the walk. If your dog is older or has certain health issue you should talk to your vet to see what the proper length of walk is best for your dog without overdoing it
  2. Toys that Dispense Food or Treats – Hiding their food or treats in a toy dispenser will get them up and moving around. It will also give them something fun to do.
  3. Playdates and Dog Parks – You may know someone who has a dog that is friendly with yours. Get together and let them run around and get some good exercise. Take your dog to a dog park and let them explore new dogs and a new place to run around.
If your dog is a little shy you can bring a tug of war toy or a tennis ball to play fetch with them until they get used to the park and the other dogs. This will still give them some good exercise.
  4. Training and Obedience Class – Enroll your dog into a training or obedience class. This will give them a chance to move around while also learning manners. Once they are done you can go on to teach them new tricks to keep them on the move.
  5. Obstacle Course – Make an obstacle course at home that is tailored to your dog’s breed. They will be challenged and maybe get a treat at the end.
  6. Dog Walker – We are all busy these days and may not have time to walk our dog as often as we should. Hire a dog walker to walk your dog for you.
